Which one first?
If you already know the piping is old galvanized steel and you are planning the work, start with the cost calculator. It gives the typical range for a whole house or two-flat, the City of Chicago permit lines for your number of units, and whether your town allows PEX or requires copper.
If you are seeing brown water, weak flow upstairs or leaks and are not sure what they mean, start with the 10-question check. Several of its results say to diagnose first, because the service line, a valve or the water heater can cause the same signs as old piping.
What the tools do not do
- They do not ask for a phone number or email to show a result.
- They do not see inside walls or say whether any piping is safe.
- They do not give a price for a 3 or 4 flat, a condo, a commercial building or a partial repipe; those are priced after a walk-through.
